Our Celebration Concert has become a tradition, established many years ago as a way of bringing our students together in ‘song’ from the start of the year. Over the opening weeks, students have worked intensively in choir rehearsals lead by our indefatigable Choral Director, Dermot Tutty. For those new to VCASS, launching into a 150 strong Year 7 - 12 Choir, all singing in Latin, may have been a little daunting. However, as our enthusiastic audience heard, come concert time, their contributions were excellent. And in a manner that only Mr Tutty can manage, the extended choir featuring the entire audience was a sound to behold!

New Year 11 student, Oliver Howes writes: “The 2019 celebration concert was a fantastic experience. Being immersed in an ensemble of such talented musicians was such a humbling and enjoyable event. The variety of featured acts were a great contrast to the choir, and the standard was incredible”.

As part of the celebrations, we were delighted to announce the recipients of the The Phyllis Macdonald Piano Scholarship and the Robert Stolz Viennese Music Society Scholarship. These generous awards are offered to students who demonstrate outstanding performance skill and a work ethic to match. VCASS Staff nominate and vote on these awards which provides additional lessons over and above the 31 lessons provided by VCASS. Congratulations to our 2019 recipients:

In recent years, we have also programmed and celebrated a number of the previous year’s award winners so that their outstanding achievements may inspire us all. Thank you and congratulations to our award winning performers:

Having moved the focus of our attention from the Celebration Concert, we cast our eyes ahead to the copious opportunities afforded to our students. Both our Large Ensemble and Chamber Music programs are in full swing. Performance Seminar is trialling a new approach to delivering and documenting feedback, which includes regular recording and student self-reflection. Planning is underway for a vast range of masterclasses and workshops including VCASS Arcadia Winds Day, Double Bass Day, AMDA Musical Theatre Workshop, The Australian Art Orchestra and two sessions with Principal Clarinettist of the London Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Marriner. The proximity of the new Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Building has rekindled a long standing partnership between VCASS and the MCM Orchestral program. We look forward to sharing the success of these, and many other opportunities with our community throughout the course of the year.

Performing plays a vital role in the development of an emerging artist and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our many upcoming concerts:
