Yes. VCASS is a select-entry school and entry is by audition only.

No. VCASS is unzoned. Students can apply regardless of where they live.

No, we do not offer homestay arrangements.

No. VCASS does not accept mid-year entries or deferment of offers. If you cannot take up a place, you must re-audition the following year.

No. We do not provide individual feedback on audition outcomes.

Please contact VCASS before the commencement of your audition. In some cases, an alternative arrangement may be made.

Yes. You must submit separate applications for each program (e.g., Dance and Music). Each requires a separate audition.

VCASS Open Day is held in May each year. Dates are advertised on our website and socials.

Yes. Dance applicants audition on site (except International Dance applicants, who must submit a video).

Video auditions are reviewed by a panel of specialists. This can take a few weeks. Please be patient.

Music and Dance applicants may re-audition the following year (if still eligible). Visual Arts and Theatre Arts are two-year extension programs. Applicants cannot re-apply if unsuccessful.

Applications and auditions are open for a number of months each year. If you miss the deadline, you may email enquiries@vcass.vic.edu.au outlining your situation and any extenuating circumstances. Please note: we cannot guarantee that a late audition will be possible.

The audition includes a musicianship and sight-reading component, but this does not decide the outcome. We focus on what you can do, while also stretching your potential.

No. We want to hear you keep time independently.

We recommend against originals - standard repertoire usually shows your skills more clearly.

Yes. Online call-back auditions are available and do not affect your chances.

Yes, but it’s optional and offers no advantage. If you choose to, include both in the same video.

There is no minimum AMEB grade level. Pieces from the AMEB book are requested for standard comparison. Passing an exam does not guarantee or prevent an offer.

No, but your current teacher can guide you using our audition requirements.

The day is split between academics and specialisation, with extra sessions from 4.00–5.30pm. Students also perform regularly after hours.

Applicants take part in a classical ballet class, followed by other dance activities and a short interview with the panel.

Yes, some ballet knowledge is required. However, Year 7–8 applicants with limited training are still encouraged to apply.

Potential to succeed in VCASS training including ballet skill level, flexibility, coordination, control, musicality, memory, suitability for high-level training, as well as maturity and openness.

Arrive 30 minutes early. Warm up, then join a ballet class in front of the panel, followed by short contemporary and other dance sequences. No set work required. Most auditions run about 1.5 hours.

Any ballet syllabus (RAD, Cecchetti, ATOD, BBO, etc.) is suitable. As a guide, at least one year of ballet training is recommended before auditioning.

Students in Years 6–11 can audition for entry into Years 7–12. Year 7 applicants must turn 12 by April 30.

The day is split between academic and dance specialisation, with additional classes from 4.00–5.30pm. Students perform in about 10 evening shows per year, with some Saturday rehearsals in Term 3.

No. VCASS training is intensive and designed to be your primary program. Outside training can cause exhaustion, conflict, and risk of injury.

Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled interview. You’ll present your work to a panel of VCASS teaching staff and a member of the Leadership team.

Commitment to contemporary art ideas and practices. Ability to discuss exhibitions you’ve attended and artists who inspire you. A strong folio showing a range of media, techniques, finished works, drawings, trials, and experiments. Visual diaries documenting your process

Bring your folio and visual diaries. Large works can be photographed and shown on a device (iPad/laptop). Multimedia work can also be presented digitally.

Applicants must arrive 15 minutes prior to their scheduled interview time. The applicant will be invited to introduce themselves and asked to perform the work they prepared for the video. The applicant will be asked to answer some Theatre Arts questions relating to their video submission. During the audition, panelists will introduce themselves and ask the applicant some questions about their Theatre Arts experience, academic and personal interests. You may also be asked to complete a written task. Information about this will be provided in the email sent to you regarding your audition call back.
